Middle Eastern Conflict Erupts: Houthi Rebels Call for Retaliation Following Alleged Assassination of Their Leader by Israeli Air Strikes
In a significant escalation of tensions, the Israeli army conducted airstrikes on Thursday in the capital city of Yemen, Sanaa. The targets were a meeting of Houthi leaders, resulting in the death of the Houthi "Prime Minister" and injuries to several of his colleagues.
The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have been launching attacks against Israeli territory in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza. This latest conflict was triggered by an attack by Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen and Gaza is a result of long-standing tensions between Israel and the Houthi rebels. The death of the Houthi "Prime Minister" is the highest known political figure death by Israeli airstrikes since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip.
In response to the airstrikes, the Houthi leader Ahmad Ghaleb al-Rahwi and several of his ministers were reported dead. Mehdi al-Mashat, head of the Supreme Political Council, made a vow of retaliation in a video message on Telegram, warning Israel of "dark days" to come.
The exact nature of the Houthi retaliation is currently unknown. However, the Houthi rebels have been attacking Yemeni targets for months in response to Israeli airstrikes. The attacks by the Houthi rebels have been intercepted by the Israeli army for months.
It's important to note that the Iranian ally of the Houthis involved in these events is the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which supports the Houthi militia in Yemen politically and militarily. However, the IRGC states that the Houthis make their own strategic and operational decisions.
The airstrikes mark a significant escalation in tensions between Israel and the Houthis, with the vow of retaliation by the Houthis indicating a potential escalation of violence in the ongoing conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for de-escalation to prevent further loss of life.
