Microsoft Commits Over $4 Billion to Artificial Intelligence for Educational Purposes

Microsoft has announced a significant new initiative aimed at helping 20 million people acquire in-demand AI-skilling credentials over the next two years. This move is part of a broader commitment to help people shape the future of work through the Microsoft AI Economy Institute.

The Institute, housed within the AI for Good Lab, has been established as a corporate think tank. Its mission is to explore AI's effects on work, education, and productivity, and to translate these insights into real-world solutions. The Institute will sponsor and convene researchers to delve into AI's impact, bridging the gap between technological innovation and societal impact.

Microsoft's AI-skilling effort will involve collaboration with several key partners. LinkedIn, GitHub, and global education platform Code.org are among those set to work together to build essential AI-skilling infrastructure. Microsoft will also partner with the American Federation of Teachers to ensure the development of relevant and effective training programs.

The initiative focuses on ensuring that people are equipped with the skills and tools to thrive as AI transforms the world. Microsoft emphasizes building AI to elevate humanity, not replace it, and ensuring technology empowers creativity and knowledge without deepening divides.

To further support education, Microsoft is committing to donate over $4 billion in cash and AI/cloud technology to K-12 schools, community and technical colleges, and nonprofits globally over the next five years. This investment will be managed through Microsoft Elevate, a program that consolidates and expands the company's technology support, donations, and sales for educational institutions.

Microsoft Elevate Academy will offer training ranging from foundational fluency to advanced technical AI training. The new "Hour of AI," a partnership between Microsoft and Code.org, will provide introductory AI lessons for students worldwide.

Microsoft's initiative emphasizes partnerships with governments, educators, labor unions, employers, and community leaders to ensure AI reflects human values. The Institute's academic research, already underway with global universities, will inform Microsoft Elevate's skilling programs and policy frameworks.

In addition, Microsoft is planning collaborations with institutions like the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (HWZ) to promote entrepreneurship and startup ecosystems. These collaborations will include further educational programs, startup incubations, and research projects focused on AI and entrepreneurship.

The launch of Microsoft Elevate and the AI Economy Institute marks a significant step forward in Microsoft's commitment to shaping the future of work. The company aims to enhance human judgment, empathy, and care through AI, focusing on ensuring that AI serves everyone and elevates the humanity of work.
