Mexico-US relationship praised by Sheinbaum prior to Rubio meeting, as recapped on Tuesday's morning news
President Sheinbaum to Deliver El Grito and embark on National Tour
Mexico City, Sept. 13 — President Claudia Sheinbaum is set to make history on Sept. 15, as she will perform El Grito from the National Palace balcony, reenacting the original "Cry of Dolores" made by Miguel Hidalgo in 1810, marking the start of the Mexican War of Independence.
This significant day will also see Sheinbaum visiting some states, as part of a national tour aimed at presenting government reports in every state in the country. In each state, Sheinbaum will present an individual report detailing welfare programs, public works, and other initiatives. She will be accompanied by governors during her state visits.
Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the United States due to shared interests, trade, and the large Mexican population living there. This sentiment was evident in her meeting with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which is scheduled for Wednesday in Mexico City. Rubio's visit to Mexico is his first as the Trump administration's top diplomat.
The talks, which will last for one or two hours, will focus on security and a new bilateral security "understanding." Sheinbaum stated that a good relationship has been established between her government and the U.S. counterpart.
On the day before the meeting, a poll was published showing that 56% of respondents believe the Mexican government is doing a bad or very bad job at handling the relationship with Trump. However, Sheinbaum expressed feeling proud about the opportunity to perform El Grito and reiterated her commitment to the people of Mexico.
The meeting with Rubio will take place in Mexico City, where Sheinbaum will also perform El Grito in front of a large crowd gathered in the Zócalo, Mexico City's central square. After the performance, Sheinbaum will continue her national tour, visiting all 32 entities of Mexico within three and a half weeks.
Juan Ramón de la Fuente, the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs (Foreign Minister), served in this role during the meeting with Marco Rubio, representing Mexico in diplomatic discussions. The specific feelings of Sheinbaum regarding performing El Grito were not disclosed in the article.
The focus of the meeting between Sheinbaum and Rubio will be on security and a new bilateral security "understanding." The bilateral talks between the two leaders will occur on Wednesday.
