Meta's Ray-Ban Display smart glasses redefine wearable tech with a built-in screen
Meta has unveiled its latest smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Display, marking a major step forward in wearable tech. The device is the first of its kind to feature a built-in screen, priced at $799. Its release comes as the company strengthens its already dominant position in the smart glasses market.
The glasses will initially launch in the U.S. through a select number of retail stores, offering a curated experience for early buyers. Meta's new Ray-Ban Display integrates with popular services like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta AI. This allows users to handle messaging and social media directly through the glasses. The device also serves as a public prototype for Meta's more advanced Orion glasses, which are still in development.
The company has already shipped over 3.5 million units of its previous Ray-Ban Meta glasses by the second half of 2025. This success has helped Meta capture a staggering 82% of the global XR market share in late 2025, up from 73% earlier in the year. Competitors like Xiaomi and XREAL hold just 4.2% and 2.3% respectively, with Google barely registering in recent data.
Meta's glasses use geometric waveguides for the display, reducing the 'eye glow' effect found in rival Android XR models. Those competing devices, expected to arrive in late 2026 or 2027, rely on refractive waveguides instead. This technical edge gives Meta a significant head start in the market.
The company's strategy includes partnerships with major eyewear brands to expand distribution. Alongside the Ray-Ban Display, Meta has also released the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2) and Oakley Meta Vanguard. These collaborations help target different consumer groups, reinforcing Meta's push for wider adoption. The Ray-Ban Display launch solidifies Meta's lead in smart glasses, potentially moving the company closer to a near-monopoly. With Android XR alternatives still far from release, Meta's early dominance looks set to continue. The glasses' integration with key apps and advanced display tech further cements its advantage in the growing wearable market.
