MetaMask Removes the Need for Seed Phrase with Social Sign-In Option

Behind the scenes, MetaMask engineer Francesco Andreoli utilized the Threshold Oblivious Pseudorandom Function (TOPRF) to develop the new social login feature. TOPRF is a cryptographic primitive employed in a distributed key management protocol, ensuring the recovery phrase for the wallet is stored securely on the local device.

This update aims to keep users in control of their tokens while making the process of creating, backing up, and restoring crypto wallets more accessible. Users are required to set a unique password for their wallet, adding an extra layer of security.

The new feature does not require users to manually handle the traditional 12-word secret recovery phrase. Instead, the recovery phrase is generated automatically and securely stored on the user's device. This simplifies the process of setting up a crypto wallet significantly, making it more approachable for newcomers to the world of cryptocurrency.
