In the German state of Brandenburg, the upcoming cessation of Sprinter model production in Ludwigsfelde has sparked concern among local officials and employees. The decision, made by Mercedes-Benz, will see the production of E-Sprinter models relocated to Poland, with the series production of Sprinter models at Ludwigsfelde scheduled to end by the end of 2029.

Tobias Kunzmann, the first authorized representative in Ludwigsfelde, has expressed his disapproval of the plans. Kunzmann stated that the IG Metall union reacted angrily to Mercedes-Benz's decision, and he himself expressed his sentiments by saying, "We don't want to accept this," and "It can't be that Mercedes is pulling out."

The Brandenburg state government is seeking adequate compensation for the future loss of production in Ludwigsfelde. State parliamentarian Danny Eichelbaum of the CDU has called on Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) to make the future of the plant a top priority.

The plant, which currently employs around 2,000 workers who produce Sprinter models with open body structures, will have its capacity guaranteed until the end of 2029. However, after 2030, there is currently no solution that could provide full compensation for the phasing out of production at a constant employment level.

In response to the impending changes, the Brandenburg state government aims to ensure that Sprinter models with internal combustion engines continue to be produced in Ludwigsfelde. In addition, a so-called start-up factory for future van models and a center of competence for the individualization of e-vans are currently planned.

Mercedes-Benz offers Sprinter models with both fossil fuels and electric drive, with plants in Ludwigsfelde, Düsseldorf, and Charleston (USA). The company's decision to relocate the production of E-Sprinter models from Ludwigsfelde is likely influenced by the challenges faced by car manufacturers in Germany, such as new competitors in China and US tariffs.

An action day is planned for Saturday, September 13, to address the concerns and discuss potential solutions for the future of the plant in Ludwigsfelde. The Brandenburg state government and local representatives are working diligently to secure the plant's long-term future and maintain employment in the region.
