Mercedes-Benz Unveils New CLA Model with Advanced Autonomous Driving System

Mercedes-Benz is set to revolutionize its coupe lineup with the introduction of the new CLA model, scheduled to start mass production in April 2025. This latest offering from the automaker targets younger, more fashionable, and sportier customers.

The new CLA model will feature an advanced intelligent driving system, a first for Mercedes-Benz, provided by Momenta. The system is designed to offer urban navigation assistance, a significant leap forward in autonomous driving technology.

The new CLA model will also be the first by Mercedes-Benz to offer a pure electric version. It will support an 800-volt electrical architecture and up to 250 kilowatts of charging power. Production of the all-electric CLA model will commence in April 2025.

The intelligent driving system on the new CLA model will not rely on high-definition maps. Instead, it will enable urban navigation assistance, a testament to Mercedes-Benz's commitment to innovative technology.

The new CLA model will be built on Mercedes-Benz's second all-electric platform, the MMA platform. It will also use Mercedes-Benz's self-developed MB.OS operating system.

Mercedes-Benz has collaborated with Momenta, a domestic developer of intelligent driving solutions, for the first time. The company has also confirmed the use of Nvidia's Orin chip for its new all-electric CLA model.

Mercedes-Benz has been making strides in autonomous driving technology. In 2023, its Level 3 autonomous driving system received commercial licenses in Nevada and California, and testing licenses in Beijing and Shanghai. The company has also obtained commercial licenses for Level 3 autonomous driving and Level 4 unmanned parking in Germany since 2021.

The autonomous parking function for Mercedes-Benz's new models was led by the Chinese R&D team. Mercedes-Benz is also considering further localization of intelligent driving features rated at or above Level 2 for future models in China.

It's worth noting that other players in the market are also making strides in autonomous driving technology. For instance, Xiaomi's SU7, challenging Mercedes-Benz's C-class models, will be equipped with an urban navigate-on-autopilot (NOA) feature in August 2024. Aito's M7 model, competing with Mercedes-Benz's mid- to large-sized SUVs, already supports map-free navigation assistance in urban driving scenarios.

Winning the Chinese market is fundamental for Mercedes-Benz to succeed globally, as the Chinese market accounts for one-third of Mercedes-Benz's sales. The new CLA model, with its advanced autonomous driving system, is set to make a significant impact in this market.

In conclusion, the new CLA model represents a significant step forward for Mercedes-Benz in terms of autonomous driving technology. With its urban navigation assistance, advanced intelligent driving system, and pure electric version, the new CLA model is poised to redefine the coupe segment.
