Memorials in Lüner to open their entrances on September 14th, inviting the public for a commemorative day.
On Sunday, 14th September, 2025, the nationwide event "Tag des offenen Denkmals" will take place, coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (DSD). This event aims to raise awareness of the value of historical buildings and will feature several landmarks in Lünen.
One of the participating landmarks is the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule, built between 1956 and 1962 according to plans by architect Hans Scharoun. The school, considered an example of humane post-war architecture, will open its heritage-protected building part on Sunday. Guided tours will be offered every full hour on the day, providing insights into the school's history.
Another notable landmark is Villa Urbahn on Graf-Adolf-Straße, designed by Anton Huber in 1925 and protected as a heritage site since 2017. Villa Urbahn now houses the Lünen City Museum and will be open on both Saturday, 13th September, and Sunday, 14th September, from 10 am to 6 pm. Alongside current exhibitions, guided tours of the villa and a children's painting workshop will be held.
The Alte Schule Alstedde on Alter Kirchweg, an 1865 ensemble, will also participate in the event. This site includes a school building, teacher's residence, stable, and school garden, and is a rare example of the so-called "one-room school". Guided tours will be offered at Alte Schule Alstedde, and the school garden can be freely visited. Additional entertainment at Alte Schule Alstedde includes coffee, cake, and musical performances in the style of the 1860s. Note: The buildings are not barrier-free.
The former canteen of the Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia on Huettenallee, an industrial building from around 1870, will also be open on Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. After recent heritage-appropriate renovation, the former canteen now offers conference and event spaces. Refreshments will be available throughout the day. The former canteen is part of Lünen's oldest industrial site, the 1826-established Eisenhuette Westfalia.
Further information about the opened landmarks can be found on the official app and the website www.tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de. The event's nationwide theme is "Priceless: invaluable or irreplaceable?". Don't miss this opportunity to explore Lünen's rich history and heritage!
