Memorial Day Celebrations Spotlighted in the Dresden Area

On Sunday, the 14th of September, 2025, the 30th annual "Tag des offenen Denkmals" (Heritage Day) will take place across Germany, with a special focus on the Dresden region. This year's event, organised by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Protection), promises a diverse program nationwide, with over 5,500 monuments opening their doors to the public.

In Dresden, visitors can explore the Fortress Königstein, a historical gem that offers a glimpse into the region's past. The fortress, open from 9 am to 6 pm, will also unveil a DDR bunker hidden in the fortress forest. No prior registration is required to visit the fortress, and the entrance fee includes all activities.

For those interested in industrial history, the old brickworks in Meißen will open as an industrial monument. Guided tours will be offered at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm.

The 110-year-old Elbe towing barge "Waltraut" will be open for visitors in Dresden-Friedrichstadt. Built in 1913 and located at the original 1895 North Quay, the "Waltraut" barge offers a unique insight into the past. Inside, visitors can see the 11 cargo holds and the reconstructed living and sleeping quarters of the former shipowner's family.

In addition to guided tours, there will be an accompanying program from 10 am to 4 pm at the "Waltraut" barge, including knot-tying lessons and a bouncy castle. Free guided tours through the Old Post Office in Radebeul, currently being converted into a music school, start every half hour. No prior registration is required for these tours.

In Pillnitz, guided tours on Carl Gustav Carus and climate change will be offered. The Carus tour begins at 11:30 am, and registration can be made at [email protected]. The climate change tour begins at 2 pm, and registration can be made at [email protected].

Students of the Radebeul Music School will perform at the Old Post Office in Radebeul. The Old Post Office will be open to visitors from 10 am to 4 pm.
