Greatist Team's Meditation Session: A Mindful Journey in Garrison, NY

The Greatist Team embarked on a mindful journey last weekend during their company retreat in Garrison, NY. The meditation session, led by an unspecified instructor during the retreat, marked the third week of the #zensperiment series.

As the session began, some members of the team found it hard to sit still, with fidgeting and giggles interrupting the peaceful atmosphere. However, a suggestion from Shana, whose Twitter handle is @ShanaDLebowitz, offered a solution. She advised observing sensations in the body from a third-person perspective, a technique often used to help with discomfort during meditation.

The writer, who was scheduled to lead the following meditation session, felt self-conscious about taking on this role, comparing herself to previous instructors. Yet, she provided instructions to the team about posture and breathing, guiding them through a serene meditation experience.

During the meditation session held on the porch of a colonial house, Derek, Kelli, and Laura were seen meditating silently at a picnic table located in an enclosed spot to the right of the trail. Their peaceful demeanour, reminiscent of individuals waiting for a bus, was a sight to behold.

Shana, who had attended lessons in Zen and shamatha meditation, felt perfectly at peace for the first time since starting the meditation project. The truth about the writer's own discomfort during meditation was not mentioned to the group.

The view from the top of the South Redoubt Revolutionary War Heritage Trail, visible from the picnic table, was breathtaking, with West Point military academy in sight. The session ended with Shana's request for another minute-long meditation, which was met with eager nods from the team.

Despite the initial challenges, the meditation session proved to be a valuable experience for the Greatist Team, fostering mindfulness and promoting a sense of peace and tranquility amidst the picturesque landscape of Garrison, NY.
