"Matthew Engaged in Controversy with Hoeneß"
In a heated exchange during the anniversary show "30 years of 'Doppelpass' on Sport1," Lothar Matthäus expressed his disapproval of Uli Hoeneß's actions, describing them as "roundabout punches that a club that wants peace doesn't need."
Matthäus' criticism was not limited to statements about Hoeneß or Bayern Munich's sports director Max Eberl, but also included contract details of young talent Nicolas Jackson. The veteran footballer questioned the terms of Jackson's loan from FC Chelsea, particularly the condition that the purchase obligation would only be triggered if Jackson played the first 40 games, a feat that seems unlikely.
The conflict between the two parties arose during the tug-of-war over national player Nick Woltemade. Matthäus, as Jackson's agent, raised concerns about Hoeneß's statement regarding a model involving guaranteed playing time for Jackson at FC Bayern München. Hoeneß, however, emphasised that Bayern prefers a cautious strategy with limited risk rather than committing to Jackson's playtime to trigger a mandatory purchase clause.
Hoeneß, Bayern Munich's honorary president, responded to Matthäus' criticism by stating that he still has little to say to him. Matthäus found recent statements by Hoeneß embarrassing, going as far as to say that big headlines are not made by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge or Jan-Christian Dreesen, but by Uli Hoeneß.
The exchange between the two football legends did not go unnoticed, with Matthäus reporting that he received calls from people at FC Bayern asking why Hoeneß was starting again. In a seemingly dismissive remark, Hoeneß called Matthäus "doesn't have all his marbles."
Despite the public disagreement, it's clear that both men have played significant roles in the success of FC Bayern Munich. Whether this latest spat will impact the club remains to be seen.
