Massive numbers of students, just under thirty million, embark on a groundbreaking, nationwide school year for 2025-2026.
The 2025-2026 academic year in Việt Nam is set to begin with a grand ceremony on September 5, marking a significant milestone in the nation's education sector. The event, organised by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Việt Nam's education sector, will take place at the National Convention Centre in Hà Nội and will be broadcast live on VTV1.
This academic year holds great importance as it is the first to implement the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress, the National Assembly's five-year socio-economic development plan for 2026-2030, and the Politburo’s resolution on breakthroughs in education and training. It also marks the first year under the new Law on Teachers.
President Lương Cường has emphasised the theme of the year as "Discipline - Creativity - Breakthrough - Development". In his address, he urged teachers, education managers, and staff to uphold their dedication and love for the profession, embrace innovation, and foster happy learning environments. He also encouraged students to pursue their dreams, study diligently, and become patriotic, responsible, and compassionate citizens with a bold vision for a prosperous and joyful Việt Nam.
The ceremony will witness the attendance of senior Party and State leaders, including Party General Secretary Tô Lâm, State President Lương Cường, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn, and other leaders. The event will also feature a keynote address by Party General Secretary Tô Lâm, celebrating 80 years of the education sector and inaugurating the 2025-2026 school year.
Senior Party and State leaders will present the First-class Labour Order to the MoET, give policy directives, and strike the ceremonial drum to mark the new academic year. Nearly 30 million students and about 1.7 million teachers will simultaneously salute the flag and sing the national anthem at the opening ceremony.
The 2025-2026 academic year targets ambitious enrollment rates. It aims for 35 per cent enrollment of children under three in nursery schools, 94 per cent enrollment of preschool-aged children, 99.7 per cent of six-year-olds entering grade 1, and 99.5 per cent completing primary school.
Central ministries, Party committees, and local authorities are urged to give stronger support to education through practical policies, ensuring the best possible environment for teaching, studying, and training. Parents are encouraged to continue accompanying schools and society in caring for future generations.
The event also signifies the nationwide consolidation of administrative units, implementation of the two-tier local government model, and the rollout of Politburo Resolution No 71-NQ/TW on education and training breakthroughs. This year, the first academic year will also roll out the National Assembly’s resolutions on tuition waivers and support for preschool and general education students, school meal programs, construction of schools in border communes, and nationwide adoption of two sessions per day.
As the nation unites to celebrate the new academic year, the ceremony will be a testament to Việt Nam's commitment to its education sector and its vision for a prosperous future. The first time that all schools nationwide celebrate the new academic year in unison, it promises to be a memorable occasion for students, teachers, and the entire nation.
