Massive Layoffs in Hessen Region
In a recent development, IG Metall, a prominent German labour union, has voiced its criticism over the job cuts in battery production, a burgeoning technology, at BorgWarner's facilities in Darmstadt and Langen.
BorgWarner's Battery Technology Centre employs around 300 people, with an additional 500 working in the production area. However, the company has announced that it will be reducing its workforce by approximately 40% in the engineering sector and 45% in the production area.
This decision comes amidst a challenging market situation and difficulties with major customers such as Daimler Truck and Volvo. It is important to note that BorgWarner acquired battery manufacturer Akasol in 2021, a move that was made when Akasol was on a growth trajectory.
Jörg Köhlinger, the district manager of IG Metall Mitte, has expressed his dismay over the job cuts, finding them incomprehensible. He has emphasised that this development will not be accepted without a fight.
IG Metall has strongly opposed BorgWarner's job cuts in Darmstadt and Langen, emphasising that the reduction in jobs in battery technology—considered a future technology—will not be accepted without resistance. They demand long-term future concepts from management and have announced that IG Metall will take all possible measures to continue the future-oriented path and oppose the planned cuts.
Köhlinger, in particular, has demanded long-term future concepts from BorgWarner's management, especially in an area that supports the mobility transition. This stance reflects the union's commitment to ensuring job security and fostering growth in sectors crucial to the future of technology and mobility.
