Massive Fire at a High School in Hannover-Misburg: Gymnasium Inflames City District
The fire at the Grundschule Mühlenweg in Hannover-Misburg, which broke out on Thursday evening at approximately 18:44, has been brought under control, but follow-up extinguishing work is expected to continue until late into the night due to the collapsed roof.
Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire had already spread to the building, and the operation to control the blaze was challenging, according to the deputy head of the Hannover fire department, Gregor Fleischmann. Two firefighters suffered burns during the operation, and a lifting platform was damaged due to the high intensity of the fire. Both injured firefighters were treated by the rescue service and taken to a Hannover clinic. One firefighter has since been discharged from the clinic.
The fire spread to the entire gymnasium, but the adjacent school buildings were protected. No further injuries were reported, and the fire did not spread to other school buildings. The Fire Department of Hannover, along with the Technical Relief Organization (THW), mobilized around 207 personnel, including firefighters and emergency services, to tackle the blaze.
Mayor Belit Onay visited the scene and estimated the damage to be in the millions. She also expressed gratitude to the emergency services, rescue service, and police for their intervention and wished the injured firefighters a speedy recovery. Hans Jürgen Licht, head of the schools department of the state capital Hannover, announced that classes for all students of the Grundschule Mühlenweg will be canceled tomorrow, Friday.
Residents of the affected areas were advised to keep doors and windows closed and to switch off ventilation systems as a precaution due to the smoke cloud from the fire. Press inquiries can be directed to the Fire Department Hannover, contact details provided.
