In the city of Weißenfels, Saxony-Anhalt, a fire broke out at the Remondis recycling site, heavily damaging a sorting facility for bulky waste and commercial waste. The fire started at around 12 pm in a hardening basin.

Upon the fire's outbreak, the company alerted emergency services, and the voluntary fire brigade Hahnerberg was the first on the scene. They launched an immediate extinguishing attack, preventing the fire from spreading to other hall areas. A total of 50 professionals from the fire brigade and the voluntary fire brigades Hahnerberg and Cronenberg were at the scene.

However, the fire had already spread to the roof structure and roof by the time the first responders arrived, making the follow-up extinguishing work challenging. Dismantling the intermediate ceiling is necessary to locate any remaining hotspots.

A column of smoke was visible after the fire started, and there was a suspicion of smoke inhalation in two employees of the company. Fortunately, they were examined by the rescue service on site and did not require hospitalization for further treatment.

The Hahnerberger Street is fully closed between Theishahnerner Street and Korzerter Street due to the incident, causing traffic congestion. Traffic is being diverted, and WSW has set up a shuttle service from Cronenberg to Mastweg to help alleviate the disruption. City buses are ending at the South School Center as a result of the road closure.

The criminal police have started investigations into the cause of the fire, and the occupational safety authority is also involved in the incident. The amount of property damage caused by the fire cannot yet be determined.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available. Stay safe, Weißenfels.
