Mashpee First Light Casino Roasts Itself with Pitch-Perfect 'Trailer Park' Ad

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has opened a scaled-down version of its long-planned casino in Taunton, Massachusetts. After years of legal battles and financial hurdles, the First Light Casino now operates in a temporary modular building—far smaller than the original vision. Despite the setbacks, tribal leaders remain determined to expand the project.

The tribe first proposed a $1 billion megaresort, complete with a vast casino floor, luxury hotels, and theme-park attractions. However, legal challenges nearly stripped the Mashpee Wampanoag of their sovereign status, while the former tribal chairman was imprisoned for corruption. These obstacles forced a dramatic downsizing of the project.

The First Light Casino currently operates at a fraction of its intended size. Yet, with Weeden at the helm and ongoing efforts to secure funding, the tribe continues working toward a larger, permanent facility. The project’s future hinges on overcoming past legal and financial barriers.
