Maryland's governor states that the deportation cases of Kilmar Abrego Garcia require a fair legal procedure
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an El Salvador native who has been living in Maryland since illegally entering the U.S. in 2011, was released from pre-trial detention in Tennessee on August 22, 2022. The Maryland resident, who was mistakenly deported to a Salvadoran prison and later returned to the U.S. to face federal smuggling charges, is now back in the custody of his brother in Maryland.
On Monday, August 25th, Abrego Garcia will report to Pretrial Services for the District of Maryland by 10 a.m. He will also wear an ankle monitor with GPS location tracking and will be subject to several conditions, including not possessing any firearms, not using alcohol excessively, attending an anger management program, and avoiding contact with any known MS-13 gang member.
CASA, an immigrant rights organization, will hold a rally and prayer vigil on Monday morning in support of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Jossie Sapunar, director of communications for CASA, states that activism and support are helping Abrego Garcia's family during this difficult time.
In April, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen visited and spoke with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador. On Sunday morning, Senator Van Hollen was spoken to by El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele since his trip to El Salvador in April. The Justice Department has offered Abrego Garcia a deal to stay in custody, plead guilty, and be deported to Costa Rica with guaranteed protections. However, if Abrego Garcia does not accept the deal by Monday, it will no longer be available, according to court documents.
Abrego Garcia lived with his wife and three children in Prince George's County, Maryland, at the time of his deportation. If taken into ICE custody upon arrival in Maryland, Abrego Garcia will have access to his attorneys. Maryland Democratic Governor Wes Moore wants the justice system to decide deportation cases like Kilmar Abrego Garcia's.
The rally is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. in Hopkins Plaza in front of the Baltimore federal building. CASA invites the community to come together and show support for Abrego Garcia and his family during this challenging time.
