Maryland releases list of gambling platforms issued with cease-and-desist orders
Maryland is stepping up its game against unauthorized gambling platforms, sending cease-and-desist letters to a list of websites it believes are in violation of local laws. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency has published a roster of websites that have received such notices, numbering around fifteen. However, the state makes it clear that this list doesn't cover all illegal platforms operating in Maryland, but rather focuses on those specifically targeted by the regulator.
The list includes companies such as Bet US, BetAnySports, BetNow.eu, and VGW (Chumba Casino & Luckyland Slots). The state encourages customers to stay away from unauthorized operators by also publishing lists of Licensed Online Sports Wagering Operators and Registered Online Fantasy Competition Operators.
Maryland has beencolncerned about content and websites that breach its limits, not just real money sites without local licenses, but also the sweepstakes casino sector. In a recent move, the state targeted VGW, ordering it to cease operations by March 22 and provide a comprehensive report of its activities in Maryland by March 28.
Legal opposition to sweepstakes sites has been mounting in Maryland. The state is considering legislation that would make operating sweepstakes illegal, but as of now, these efforts have yet to result in any significant changes. Some proposed bills aimed at restricting sweepstakes games were criticized for their overly broad language, potentially affecting businesses that run sweepstakes promotions. The issue is expected to be revisited during the 2026 legislative session, offering another opportunity to refine proposals and address concerns raised earlier.
Despite discussions about regulating sweepstakes sites, no concrete actions have been taken against them in Maryland yet. For now, sites like Stake.us can continue operating in the state, provided they follow the sweepstakes model using virtual currencies instead of real money.
