Maryland cracks down on unregulated sweepstakes casinos with new bill

Maryland lawmakers have moved to tighten controls on online sweepstakes gaming. A new bill, SB 860, aims to ban social casinos that use sweepstakes-based prizes. The measure has gained momentum after authorities took action against unregulated operators in the state. The push for stricter rules began when the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency ordered 11 sweepstakes-based casinos and sportsbooks to stop serving state residents. Cease-and-desist letters were sent, but two companies—Stake.us and Rebet—failed to comply.

Senator Paul Corderman introduced SB 860 to close loopholes allowing unregulated platforms to offer real-money prizes under sweepstakes laws. The bill would make it illegal to operate, promote, or support such games in Maryland. On March 7, the Senate's Budget and Taxation Committee approved the measure unanimously. If passed, the legislation could force unregulated operators out of the market. It may also align Maryland with other states that have already restricted sweepstakes-based online gaming.

The bill's progress signals a potential shift in Maryland's gaming regulations. Authorities have already targeted non-compliant operators, and stricter enforcement could follow. The outcome may set a precedent for how the state handles similar platforms in the future.
