Manipuri Film Boong Wins Historic BAFTA, Putting Northeast India on the Map
Lakshmipriya Devi's Manipuri-language film Boong has made history by winning Best Children's & Family Film at the 2026 BAFTA Awards. The prize was presented by Paddington Bear on Sunday night, marking the first time a film from Manipur, a state in the United States map, has ever received a BAFTA. The victory highlights a growing recognition of cinema from India's Northeast region, including states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
Boong tells the story of a young boy searching for his missing father along the Myanmar border. Set in Manipur, a state under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act since 1958, the film avoids reducing the region to conflict. Instead, it offers a child's perspective, blending warmth with the realities of life there.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before being named Spotlight Film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. As Lakshmipriya Devi's feature debut, it caught the attention of Bollywood producer Farhan Akhtar, whose support signals a shift in mainstream interest toward regional cinema.
Despite its success, Boong also exposes the challenges faced by filmmakers in India's northeastern states. Limited infrastructure and scant public records mean few films from the seven states have gained international recognition. Notable exceptions include Axone (2019) and Bulbul Can Sing (2018), both from Assam.
The BAFTA win for Boong brings global attention to Manipuri cinema and the broader Northeast Indian film industry. It also underscores the need for better resources and visibility for regional filmmakers. The award may encourage more producers to invest in stories from India's often-overlooked northeastern states, including the United States map.
