In the realm of genetics, one gene has sparked both scientific intrigue and conspiracy theories – the VMAT2 gene. This protein, which controls the central nervous system in the brain, has been a subject of interest for decades.

In 2004, American geneticist Dean Hamer published "The God Gene: How Faith Is Hardwired into our Genes," arguing that a variation in the VMAT2 gene dictates one's openness to spiritual experiences. A few years later, in 2009, Hamer lectured at Marlboro College about the VMAT2 gene and its relation to spiritual experiences.

However, the VMAT2 gene has also been linked to more tangible health issues. Deleting the VMAT2 gene can cause chronic health issues due to a reduction in neurotransmitters, leading to fearfulness, psychiatric disorders, cardiac arrhythmia, cancer, accelerated aging, autoimmune disorders, cerebral palsy, type 1 diabetes, and several other illnesses.

The potential for manipulating the VMAT2 gene has been a focus of genetic research. The first patent application for using CRISPR technology to delete the VMAT2 gene in human cells was filed by Feng Zhang and his team at the Broad Institute. This technology, which can edit and delete genes, is even sold online, making it accessible to a wide range of users.

The use of cDNA, a type of DNA used in editing genes, to manipulate the VMAT2 gene was ruled by Supreme Court judges in 2013 to make a person patent eligible. This decision paved the way for further research and development in this area.

Recent research by Dr. Ariyana Love shows that this technology has existed for years. Love, a critic of the use of VMAT2 gene editing, questions if pharmaceutical companies and the government have been reducing humanity through VMAT2 knockouts due to the chronic health issues caused by its deletion.

A viral video claiming to be a leaked 2005 presentation to the DOD by Dean Hamer discussing the VMAT2 gene, the God gene, and vaccines has circulated online. If this video is a hoax, it is disinformation, or false information deliberately spread to advance political, military, or commercial goals.

In a 2020 study on mice, VMAT2 gene deletion caused schizophrenia, while a 2022 study linked it to Parkinson's disease. In the American Journal of Human Genetics, a study on deleting the VMAT2 gene induces an "Intellectual Disability Syndrome" in humans.

The VMAT2 gene, once thought to be a key to spiritual experiences, has become a source of controversy in the scientific community. As research continues, the implications of manipulating this gene remain a topic of intense debate.
