Man Who Established Wind Measurement System and Paved the Way for Maritime Weather Reports: Sir Francis Beaufort

In the realm of navigational history, two names stand out - Francis Beaufort, an Irish-born commander who developed the Beaufort Scale, and Agnes Stamp, a renowned British journalist with a penchant for luxury titles and canine tales.

Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) embarked on his maritime journey in 1790, joining the Royal Navy as a midshipman. His early years at sea were marked by a close encounter with a shoal off Indonesia, an incident that underscored the importance of accurate charts. This experience, coupled with his subsequent duties reporting weather conditions every two hours, laid the foundation for Beaufort's future endeavours.

In 1805, Beaufort, then serving as a hydrographer, presented his 13-point wind force scale in his private logbook entry of January 13, 1806. The Beaufort Scale, as it came to be known, aimed to standardize wind and weather observations, providing a simple yet effective method for seafarers to gauge wind strength. The scale was not formally adopted by the navy until 1838, but its impact on navigation remains significant even today, particularly in the Shipping Forecast.

Beaufort's career flourished, and he rose through the ranks to become a captain and was later given command of HMS Woolwich. His contributions were recognised both within and outside the navy. He was knighted in 1848 and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1829. Beaufort also trained Robert FitzRoy, the creator of the Shipping Forecast.
