Male Narcissism and Misogyny: An Exploration
In a world where love and relationships are supposed to bring people together, a darker side has come to light. A study by Dr. Keiller (2010) has revealed a troubling connection between narcissism and misogyny, particularly among heterosexual men.
Narcissism, a personality trait characterised by an inflated sense of self-importance and a deep need for admiration, is not exclusive to any gender. However, misogyny, the hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women, can be a trait of narcissism, especially in men.
Dr. Keiller's study found that heterosexual narcissists exhibit a significantly higher frequency of misogynistic behaviors compared to non-narcissistic individuals. This includes subtle acts, such as insulting women who reject them by degrading their physical attributes and sexual desirability, and more extreme behaviors, such as stalking and harassment following rejection.
The study also indicates that narcissistic heterosexual men are particularly invested in subordinating heterosexual women. This can manifest in various ways, from defending and reinforcing harmful gender roles, whether overtly or covertly, to exhibiting more hostility towards heterosexual women than any other group.
It's important to note that this is not a universal trait among all narcissists or men. However, it underscores the need for vigilance when entering into new relationships. Be wary of partners who defend and reinforce harmful gender roles, and be aware of signs of narcissistic behavior, such as an unwavering sense of sexual entitlement.
Narcissists, regardless of gender, are capable of manipulating their partners into fast-forwarding the physical aspects of the relationship. They may show resentment, cold withdrawal, or forceful attempts when their advances are rejected.
In the digital age, the danger doesn't stop at the physical world. Women disproportionately face certain types of harassment on social media, such as cyberbullying and revenge porn, when they reject men. Misogynistic trolls who target women online are part of a larger group of narcissists with high levels of psychopathy, sadism, and Machiavellianism.
The connection between misogynistic attitudes towards women and homicide against women is well-established (Campbell, 1981). Elliot Rodger, a prime example of malignant narcissism and misogynistic beliefs, created disturbing videos and a manifesto about his entitlement to women's bodies before his murderous rampage (Broogard, 2014).
As we move forward, it would be interesting for future research to explore whether female narcissists possess misogynistic attitudes as well. It's also crucial to address the unequal treatment of women in society. Anyone who refuses to acknowledge this inequality is probably not compatible in the long run.
When dating someone new, it's important to avoid revealing personal information like address and real phone number until you've met in person. By staying vigilant and informed, we can protect ourselves and promote healthier relationships.
