Majority of Germans Embrace Autonomous Public Transportation, According to Poll

In a recent survey conducted by Bitkom Research, it has been revealed that a significant number of Germans are open to the idea of autonomous transport. The telephone survey, which took place between the 28th and 32nd calendar week of 2025, interviewed a total of 1,004 people aged 16 and over, including 736 respondents who have at least one car in their household.

The survey results show that 99% of Germans are willing to use one or more autonomous means of transport. This openness is reflected in the high percentage of respondents who would consider using autonomous vehicles for various modes of travel. For instance, 70% of Germans would board an autonomous bus, 68% an autonomous mini- or shuttle bus, and 72% an autonomous U- or S-Bahn.

Interestingly, a substantial number of Germans are also open to the idea of autonomous long-distance travel. 44% of respondents would use an autonomous regional or long-distance train, 56% an autonomous taxi, and around a quarter (27%) would board an autonomous aircraft. Even in the realm of maritime transport, around a third (34%) of Germans would board an autonomous ship.

While the majority of Germans are embracing the idea of autonomous transport, opinions diverge when it comes to the future standard of autonomous driving. Half (50%) of respondents believe the German automotive industry should focus more on its classic values, while 53% consider autonomous driving to be the future standard. However, 43% consider it an overhyped trend.

The survey also highlighted the importance of digital developments for the German automotive industry. 86% of Germans view digitalization as an opportunity for mobility, and 78% believe the industry can only compete with digital innovations. Furthermore, 77% expect cooperations with tech companies to be indispensable in international competition.

The German automotive industry is already collaborating with various companies to develop and implement autonomous driving technologies. For example, ZF partners with Vinfast to create sensor fusion and control units for Level 2+ and aim for Level 3 and beyond. Momenta partners with Uber to advance autonomous driving technology through data-driven algorithms and hybrid strategies for assisted and fully autonomous driving, with ongoing tests planned from 2026. Mercedes-Benz and BMW lead in Level 3 autonomous driving approvals in Germany.

In conclusion, the survey by Bitkom Research indicates a widespread acceptance of autonomous transport among Germans. As the German automotive industry continues to collaborate with tech companies to develop and implement autonomous driving technologies, it is clear that digitalization will play a crucial role in the future of mobility in Germany.
