Mahindra unveils electric compact SUV lineup: Four new electric SUV models to enter the market from 2027, potentially becoming available in Australia.
Mahindra, an Indian automaker, has revealed four new compact SUV concepts, set to make their way to Australia once production begins from 2027. The unveiling took place at a special event in Mumbai.
All four models are soft-roaders, with front-wheel drive as the standard and all-wheel drive as an option. The exact positioning of these new concepts in the Mahindra line-up is yet to be clarified.
Each concept is based on a flexible new monocoque platform called NU_IQ. This platform promises to cater for petrol, diesel, hybrid, and BEV powertrains, offering the same flexibility as the NU_IQ platform.
Inside, Mahindra has promised a return to more buttons for basic operations, alongside the now-requisite digital screens. Luggage capacity has been quoted at up to 644 litres behind row 2 to the roof and 450 litres to the top of the back seat.
The NU_IQ models are designed with safety in mind, aiming to meet five-star ANCAP safety, as well as G-NCAP and E-NCAP. Structural safety features include a Twin-Trident Optimized load path and a Uni-Ring unified hotformed door ring.
NU_IQ boasts off-road friendly measurements such as a 227mm ground clearance and a 28-degree approach angle. Despite the soft-roader underpinnings, it offers key measurements typically found in off-road vehicles.
The four new Mahindra concept vehicles, expected between 2027 and later in Australia, are targeted at the electric light commercial vehicle market, electric small car market, electric compact SUV market, and electric midsize SUV market. The BEVs from Mahindra, including the BE 6e and XEV 9e, have already been forecast for Australia.
The concepts are named Vision.T, Vision.SXT, Vision.X, and Vision.S. The Vision.X could be a direct replacement for the XUV3XO that's recently gone on-sale in Australia. It is a facelift of a model that's been around in India since 2019, first known as the XUV300.
The Vision.S is presented as a smaller urban-friendly spin-off from the Scorpio 4x4, or a potential replacement for an SUV called the Bolero not sold in Australia.
Mahindra sources different aspects of its powertrains for its bespoke EVs from Volkswagen, French Supplier Valeo, and BYD. NU_IQ features the highest command seating position in-class, a flat floor for ICE as well as EV models, a new-generation operation system dubbed NU_UX, a five-link independent rear suspension with new 'Davinci' adaptive shock absorbers all-round, and variable ratio steering.
Key measurements for NU_IQ include off-road friendly 227mm ground clearance, a 28-degree approach angle, a 28.2-degree ramp over angle, a 34.9-degree departure angle, and a 10.5m turning circle. Maximum tyre size is 760mm.
Mahindra claims NU_IQ is its stiffest platform and that it weighs less than key global rivals. The new concepts are poised to bring a fresh wave of compact SUVs to the Australian market, with Mahindra's focus on safety, versatility, and efficiency at the forefront.
