Madrid stands alone at the summit of La Liga, Atlético Madrid winless.
In the world of Spanish football, this past weekend saw some exciting action as Atlético Madrid drew 2-2 with Alavés, marking the second consecutive match they have drawn. This is the first time since the 2009/10 season that Atlético hasn't won in the first three games of a La Liga season.
The match at Mendizorrotza Stadium was not without its drama. A fan required medical attention in the stands, causing a nine-minute interruption in play. Despite the setback, Atlético Madrid took an early lead through Argentine Giuliano Simeone in the 7th minute. However, Alavés equalized in the 14th minute courtesy of a penalty scored by Carlos Vicente. The scoring continued as Vedat Muriqi scored for the Balearic Islands in the 18th minute, but Vinicius Junior responded for the opposing team in the 38th minute, and no further goals were scored by either side.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid, currently sitting at the top of the Champions League table with nine points from nine possible, faced no opposition in terms of goals scored, but they did have three goals disallowed during the match.
In the La Liga standings, Atlético Madrid finds themselves in 16th place with two points, one behind Majorca, who remain in 18th and penultimate place with just one point. Four clubs have six points each: Villarreal, FC Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, and Getafe. Getafe, the only one of the four with six points each to have played this round, suffered a 3-0 loss away to Valencia in their previous match.
Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Benfica in the group stage of the Champions League, while Atlético Madrid will aim to turn their fortunes around when they face Villarreal on September 13, 2025. Athletic Bilbao will also be in Champions League action, facing Sporting.
As the 2025/26 La Liga season continues to unfold, the battle for supremacy promises to be as intense as ever.
