Luka Modrić reveals Ronaldo admiration, Mourinho tensions, and his waiter backup plan
Luka Modrić has shared personal stories from his football career in a recent interview. The Real Madrid midfielder spoke about his childhood heroes, toughest coaches, and even his backup career choice. His reflections cover everything from idolising Zvonimir Boban to working under José Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.
Modrić grew up admiring AC Milan, inspired by Croatian legend Zvonimir Boban. His love for the club began in childhood, long before he became a professional footballer.
Among the managers he has worked with, Carlo Ancelotti stands out as the best. Modrić praised his tactical intelligence and warmth, recalling how Ancelotti once invited him to dinner when he was alone in Madrid. This personal touch built trust between them. José Mourinho, however, was the toughest coach he ever had. Modrić admitted that Mourinho’s direct approach sometimes led to tense moments, including an incident where Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to tears for failing to track back. Despite the strictness, Modrić credited Mourinho for bringing him to Real Madrid in 2012, though he regretted that their time together lasted only one season. Beyond the pitch, Modrić sees himself as a humble person leading a normal life. If football hadn’t worked out, he would have pursued a career as a waiter, having trained at the Borik hospitality school. His down-to-earth attitude contrasts with his global fame. When asked about the greatest player, Modrić chose Ronaldo over Messi. He highlighted Ronaldo’s skill, work ethic, and character as unmatched. Yet, among his mentors, Tomo Bašić—his youth coach—remains the most influential figure in his development.
Modrić’s career has been shaped by strong influences, from childhood idols to demanding managers. His respect for Ancelotti’s leadership and Mourinho’s intensity reflects the different styles that moulded him. Meanwhile, his admiration for Ronaldo and gratitude for Bašić show the personal connections behind his success.
