Lucas Wars Graphic Novel Chronicles George Lucas's Creation Process and the Development of Star Wars

The highly anticipated graphic novel, Lucas Wars, is set to hit shelves on September 16, published by Macmillan. This English translation of a French story, first published in 2023, offers an in-depth look into the life of George Lucas, the creator of the iconic Star Wars universe.

Written by journalist Laurent Hopman, Lucas Wars traces Lucas' life from his aimless youth to his film school days and movie-making career. The graphic novel delves into Lucas' battles with 20 Century Fox, his friendships with Francis Ford Coppola, and his partnership with his wife Marcia Lucas.

The illustrator behind this captivating graphic novel is Renaud Roche, a renowned storyboard artist and illustrator. Roche's task was not an easy one, as Carrie Fisher, a character in the graphic novel, was the hardest person for him to draw due to her mirage-like look that changes constantly. Despite this challenge, Roche's ability to stylize characters ensures they are both highly recognizable and highly expressive.

Roche's work also overcomes the challenge of portraying a decade-sprawling story often with people sitting and talking in office or boardroom settings. He achieves this by utilising camera angles and framing to keep the narrative engaging and visually stimulating.

Lucas Wars encounters a comic book paradox: realistic faces often clash with expressiveness. However, Roche's illustrations manage to strike a balance, ensuring the characters are both lifelike and expressive.

The graphic novel also recounts the many obstacles and near-figurative deaths Lucas had to overcome to make Star Wars. An extended look at the movie's casting process for the graphic novel can be found below.

For English-speaking readers, the wait is almost over. The English-language edition of Lucas Wars, translated by Jeremy Melloul, will be available on shelves on Sept. 16. Don't miss out on this fascinating journey into the life of George Lucas and the creation of Star Wars.
