Lowered Chance of Diarrhea and Nausea
In a recent development, the German supermarket chain Edeka has issued a recall for its 500-gram Zwiebelmettwurst sausage specialty, produced by Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH. The recall comes after the discovery of VTEC, a harmful strain of E. coli, in the product.
The affected product bears a best before date of 27.08.2025 and batch number 133. It was sold in several federal states, including Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Berlin, Hamburg, Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Thuringia.
E. coli bacteria, commonly found in the intestines of ruminants such as cattle, sheep, or goats, can cause severe diseases. These include watery diarrhea (in severe cases, bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In children, a complication of E. coli infection is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure, temporary dialysis, and in some cases, death.
The E. coli bacteria can produce toxins called Shigatoxins, which are particularly harmful. Anyone who has already consumed the product and develops symptoms should seek immediate medical help and mention a possible EHEC infection.
Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH, located at Industriestraße 2, 07907 Schleiz, Germany, strongly advises against consuming the affected product. The company urges customers to return the product to the store for a refund of the purchase price.
It's worth noting that this is not the first recall in recent times. Recently, Rewe also had to remove a cheese from the market due to acute health risks, and a household appliance manufacturer also had to issue a recall for several models.
