Lower Manhattan's New Classroom Blends Community Space with Climate Resilience
A new community space called The Classroom has opened inside Wagner Park Pavilion in Lower Manhattan. The 1,200-square-foot venue marks a key step in the city's $200 million Battery Coastal Resiliency Project, designed to protect against rising sea levels and climate risks. The venue launched on March 24, 2023, as part of a broader $300 million redesign of Wagner Park. Its name reflects its flexible layout, which includes 90 chairs, 20 tables, a podium, and even child-sized furniture. The space can host meetings, exhibitions, or private events, with the first hour of rental priced at $250 and each additional hour at $125.
Floor-to-ceiling windows offer clear views of the Statue of Liberty, adding to the venue's appeal. Inside, a built-in AV system features ceiling speakers, wireless microphones, a projection screen, and a 98-inch monitor. Sustainability is also central to its design, with geothermal energy, LED lighting, and recycled materials targeting net-zero carbon certification. *The Classroom* replaces the former *Gigino* restaurant, though no direct comparisons have been made about its impact on local visitors or tourists.
The opening of The Classroom expands public amenities in Lower Manhattan while supporting long-term climate resilience. Its versatile design and eco-friendly features align with the city's broader goals for sustainable infrastructure. The venue is now available for bookings, offering a modern space for community and private use.
