Lower Inflation of American Goods Compared to Other Nations
The United States has experienced a steady rise in core goods inflation since January, with an annualized rate of 1.1 percent. This trend, however, has not significantly deviated from its recent course.
In an international context, the increase in goods inflation in the United States is notable. While core goods inflation in the country remains lower than in other nations, it has been more than some, particularly when compared to 2021 figures. For instance, various countries saw core goods inflation rates ranging from 3.5% to 6%, with Mexico showing around 4.2% to 5.6% and South Africa around 2.7% to 5.6%. The U.S. core goods inflation rate, while elevated, did not provide specific figures from 2021, suggesting some variation but generally higher inflation in 2021 compared to previous years.
Interestingly, the decline in services inflation in the United States has been more than offset by the rise in core goods inflation. As a result, the overall inflation in the country has eased, with the Headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) increasing at a 1.9 percent annualized rate from January to July.
Some commentators attribute the increase in goods inflation to trade policy. However, the actual increase in core goods inflation from January through July has been less than anticipated based on international trends, indicating a relatively moderate rise compared to other countries.
On the other hand, services inflation has decreased, with the decrease more than offsetting the rise in core goods inflation. Core goods inflation (excluding food and energy) has risen modestly, but not to the levels seen in other countries this year.
In conclusion, while the United States has seen a rise in core goods inflation, it has been relatively moderate compared to international trends. The overall inflation in the country has eased, with services inflation decreasing to counterbalance the rise in core goods inflation.
