Lotto NZ unveils tech overhaul as online casino debate heats up
New Zealand's lottery operator, Lotto NZ, has completed a major technology upgrade with help from Scientific Games. The overhaul introduces new systems for gaming, retail sales, and account management. Meanwhile, plans to regulate the country's online casino market by 2026 have sparked opposition from sports groups.
The upgrade replaces Lotto NZ's existing infrastructure with Scientific Games' full Momentum suite. This includes a central gaming system, retail point-of-sale terminals, and a lottery retail management system. SG Studios' product portfolio has also been added to the platform.
The project was a joint effort between Scientific Games, Lotto NZ, and technology firm Datacom. Lotto NZ CEO Jason Delamore highlighted the improvements, saying the new technology would enhance player experiences. Scientific Games has carried out similar overhauls for lottery operators in 12 other regions over the past five years, including Canada, Australia, and the UK.
While the lottery system modernises, New Zealand's government is pushing ahead with online casino regulation by 2026. Left-wing politicians back the proposal, but 33 sports organisations oppose it. Their concern stems from potential funding cuts, as proceeds from slot machines currently support many of their activities.
The new lottery systems are now live, marking a long-term partnership between Lotto NZ and Scientific Games that dates back to 1989. The debate over online casino regulation, however, remains unresolved. Sports groups continue to warn about financial losses if slot machine revenues decline.
