Long-lasting genocide suffered by Yazidi women culminates in a hopeful future in Germany

In a significant move, the Green parliamentary group in Germany has introduced a bill aimed at providing a safe haven and long-term residence rights for Yazidi asylum seekers in the country. This legislative proposal, which prohibits the deportation of refugee families, is a symbol of Germany's commitment to supporting the victims of the Yazidi genocide.

The genocide, initiated by the Islamic State eleven years ago in Sinjar, northern Iraq, aimed at the systematic annihilation of the Yazidi people. Thousands of Yazidi women and children were raped, abducted, and enslaved during this horrific event. The pain, grief, and shock of the Yazidi genocide still run deep today.

Max Lucks, the spokesperson for human rights policy in Germany, and Katharina DrΓΆge, the parliamentary leader of the Green Party, are amongst the politicians involved in this legislative proposal. They believe that allowing Yazidis to live in peace, freedom, and dignity is crucial. Ignoring urgent court decisions regarding Yazidi asylum seekers, they argue, is an unacceptable impairment of the rule of law.

Deporting asylum-seeking Yazidi families is considered inhumane, especially considering the traumatic experiences these individuals have endured. The bill aims to give Yazidis a long-term prospect of staying in Germany, providing them with a new home and a chance to rebuild their lives.

In 2023, the German Bundestag, the parliament of Germany, recognised the crimes against the Yazidis as genocide. Germany, home to the world's largest Yazidi diaspora, is expected to acknowledge a special responsibility towards these people. The Green parliamentary group expects the federal government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), to recognise this responsibility and take action to protect Yazidi asylum seekers.

This bill is a significant step towards ensuring a safe haven for Yazidis in Germany, providing them with a new home and a chance to rebuild their lives. It is a testament to the country's commitment to upholding the rule of law and supporting the victims of genocide.
