In the bustling Chinese automobile market, demand for new SUVs is soaring, but the release of the much-anticipated Roewe W5 remains uncertain.
Roewe, a subsidiary of SAIC, has been developing the W5 for some time, and recently unveiled interior shots of two prototypes. The prototypes have been spotted outside Roewe's factory, showcasing a finished appearance compared to earlier test cars, which had wires on the dashboard.
However, concerns about the engines to be used in the W5 have caused a stir. Reports suggest that Roewe's 1.8T and 2.5 engines are deemed not strong enough for the SUV, and SsangYong's engines, though available, are considered too old and environmentally unfriendly. Despite these concerns, rumors persist that Roewe may still be considering SsangYong engines for the W5.
In a notable development, the Roewe D6 has set a new Guinness power consumption record for an EV in China. Meanwhile, the Roewe M7 PHEV has started pre-sale at 13,700 USD, and the Roewe D7 NEV sedan has been launched in China, starting at 17,300 USD.
It's important to note that Roewe has not yet confirmed any information regarding the W5's release. Delays in production are rumored to be caused by troubles at SsangYong and the engine-related issue.
As we wait for more updates, the Chinese market continues to hunger for new SUVs. The W5, if released, could potentially make a significant impact given its development over a significant period and the high demand for SUVs in the market. Stay tuned for more updates on the Roewe W5 SUV.
