Local authorities in Staffordshire have granted a new contract for traffic signals and signage installation.

Staffordshire County Council and Swarco Continue Partnership for Traffic Management

Staffordshire County Council has awarded a new long-term contract to Swarco UK & Ireland for the maintenance of traffic signals and signage across the region. This marks the continuation of a partnership that has been instrumental in modernizing Staffordshire's traffic network since 1999.

The partnership between the council and Swarco has delivered lasting improvements to the traffic infrastructure, managing multiple contractors and handling traffic management requirements with ease. Swarco will raise and manage necessary permits for all works, including civils, throughout the contract.

Emily Madsen, the Lighting and Intelligent Transport Systems Manager at Staffordshire County Council, has been involved in the partnership for many years. Her long-term relationship with SWARCO UK & Ireland for traffic signal and signage maintenance, spanning over a five-year period, indicates her dedication to ensuring the success of the partnership.

Under the new contract, Swarco will maintain traffic signals across 186 junctions and 384 pedestrian crossings. They will also be responsible for maintaining 120 Vehicle Activated Signs and 124 dual-flasher signs. The company will coordinate multiple contractors and will be responsible for any highways system upgrades.

The partnership has provided real benefits for residents and businesses across Staffordshire, helping minimize disruption in the traffic system. In recognition of their achievements and innovations in traffic management, the partnership will be honoured at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025.

The CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, will be held at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. More information about the awards can be found at www.cittiawards.co.uk. The new contract is a five-year agreement with the option of a three-year extension.

The partnership between Staffordshire County Council and Swarco continues to set a high standard for effective traffic management, offering a promising future for the region's transportation system.
