Local authorities, ANSIEC, unveil timetable for upcoming Anambra Local Government elections
In a series of events marking the conclusion of local government elections in Anambra and Rivers states, the chairmen of the respective electoral commissions, Hon. Genevieve C. Osakwe (ANSIEC) and Mike Odey (RSIEC), emphasised the importance of peaceful governance and the rule of law.
During the Anambra polls, Odey stated that the certificate of return is a mandate for service, not a trophy of triumph. He commended community leaders, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the media for their vigilance and dedication during the election. Odey encouraged the use of lawful and peaceful processes for any redress and urged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to govern with humility, transparency, and fidelity to the law.
In Rivers State, Odey presented certificates of return to winners of the polls and noted that winner-takes-it-all politics has no place in local governance. He also called for the newly elected leaders to be leaders to all, supporters and non-supporters alike. The Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, was present at related election events, but the deputy chairman of the commission was not specifically mentioned.
Both Odey and RSIEC Chairman Rtd Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas reassured candidates who felt aggrieved that channels for redress are available. In Rivers State, political parties and candidates are being advised to approach the courts for redress, while in Anambra, Odey stated that a channel for redress is available within the commission.
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has announced August 29, 2026, as the date for the next local government election in Anambra State. The timetable and schedule of activities for the Anambra polls will be available for collection at ANSIEC's office from Friday, November 28, 2025. Political parties can begin obtaining nomination forms at ANSIEC's office located along the Enugu-Awka Expressway.
It is worth noting that the last Anambra council elections were held in 2024, with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) sweeping all 21 local government chairmanship seats. The exercise is in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and Section 23 of the Anambra State Electoral Law, 2024.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has not disclosed the name of the deputy chairman who was present at the event to present the certificates of return of the elections on Saturday, November 28, 2025.
In conclusion, the elections in both states were marked by a call for peace, transparency, and good governance. The newly elected leaders are urged to remember that their victory is a mandate for service, not a personal prize, and to govern with humility, transparency, and fidelity to the law.
