LIV Golf Announces Adjustments to Format for Final Team Tournament of the Season
The Team Championship is set to return in 2025 with a host of exciting changes, including a new format and the inclusion of a play-in match. The event will take place at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth, Michigan, from August 22 to 24.
The play-in match, scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, will determine the two teams that will advance to the quarterfinals. The first team to claim two points in this single-elimination match play round will secure their spot. Interestingly, the captains of the participating teams, Majesticks GC and Iron Heads GC, have yet to be publicly announced.
The quarterfinals, consisting of 12 teams, will be a thrilling spectacle. Each team contest will feature two singles matches and one alternate-shot (foursomes) match, with a total of three points up for grabs in each match. The winning teams from these quarterfinals will advance to the Championship Bracket, while the losing teams will compete in the Rankings Bracket.
Unlike last year, all 12 teams will compete on Saturday, ensuring a packed schedule of intense golfing action. The six winning quarterfinalists will progress to the Championship Bracket, where they will battle it out for a place in the finals.
The finals will be held in a strokeplay format, with each team's score comprised of all four player scores on the team. The Championship Bracket winners will then face off in Sunday's finals stage, with the winner taking home the Team Championship trophy.
Last year's champions, Cameron Smith's Ripper GC, will be looking to defend their title, but they will face stiff competition from the other 11 teams. Notable captains include Bryson DeChambeau of Crushers GC.
The 2025 Team Championship is shaping up to be an unmissable event. With its new format, play-in match, and all 12 teams competing on Saturday, golf fans are in for a treat. Stay tuned for more updates as the event approaches.
