Lithuania's New Scholarship Offers Paid Internships to Retain Global Talent
Lithuania has launched a new internship scholarship programme for international students studying in the country. The scheme will fund 20 final-year master’s students, offering them two-month placements at local companies alongside financial support.
The initiative targets sectors where Lithuania faces skill shortages, including information technology, life sciences, engineering, and technology.
The programme will provide each selected student with a monthly payment of €650 during their internship. To qualify, the placement must align with the student’s academic field. Both foreign students and members of the Lithuanian diaspora enrolled at Lithuanian universities can apply.
Universities will take the lead in nominating candidates, while the Education Exchanges Support Foundation will make the final funding decisions. The goal is to help graduates transition into Lithuania’s job market, encouraging them to remain in the country after their studies. The introduction of the scheme coincides with upcoming changes to Schengen Area travel rules. The launch of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and the Entry-Exit System (EES) may affect how international students enter and move within the zone, including Lithuania.
The scholarships will support 20 students in key industries, offering both work experience and financial aid. If successful, the programme could help address labour gaps while retaining skilled graduates in Lithuania’s economy. Applications will be managed through universities, with the first internships expected to begin soon.
