Lithium manufacturer Standard teaming up with Telescope Innovations to create advanced solid-state battery components
Standard Lithium and Telescope Innovations Announce Breakthrough in Lithium Sulfide Production
Standard Lithium, in partnership with Telescope Innovations, has developed a groundbreaking low-temperature process for producing lithium sulfide (LiS), a key raw material for next-generation solid-state batteries. This significant advancement is part of Standard Lithium's continuous focus on technological evolution and staying at the forefront of the rapidly evolving battery industry.
The new process, which has been the latest development in the collaboration between the two companies, is suitable for the production of feedstocks required by the next generation of solid-state batteries. It allows for the use of technical-grade feedstocks and has lower processing temperatures (under 100 °C), reducing equipment complexity and operating costs.
The new method was used to convert lithium hydroxide produced by Standard Lithium's Arkansas Demonstration Plant into battery-quality lithium sulfide. Samples of the lithium sulfide have been shipped to solid-state battery companies in Asia and North America for testing and validation.
The collaboration between Standard Lithium and Telescope Innovations continues to be a "win-win" for both parties. This partnership involves the development of new conversion technologies for next-generation battery materials. The new process is expected to significantly reduce the cost of producing lithium sulfide, a crucial step towards the mass production of solid-state batteries.
"We are thrilled to announce this breakthrough in lithium sulfide production," said Dr. Andy Robinson, President and COO of Standard Lithium. "This collaboration with Telescope Innovations is a testament to our commitment to driving innovation in the battery industry. We look forward to seeing the impact this new process will have on the production of solid-state batteries."
The new low-temperature approved production method for lithium sulfide was developed specifically for use with lithium chemicals produced from the Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas. This development not only enhances safety in manufacturing by avoiding high-temperature conditions and associated thermal risks, but it also positions Standard Lithium as a leading near-commercial lithium company.
A news release dated May 7, 2025, was previously issued regarding this lithium sulfide development. The new process is the latest development in the collaboration between Standard Lithium and Telescope Innovations, which began with the aim of developing new conversion technologies for next-generation battery materials.
This innovative process is a significant step towards Standard Lithium's work on the first DLE project in North America at their South West Arkansas Project Phase 1 with their joint venture partner Equinor. The company remains committed to driving sustainable and innovative solutions in the lithium industry.
