In 2019, a proposal to change Germany's national anthem was put forth by Bundestag Vice President Bodo Ramelow. The suggestion was to replace the current anthem, "Das Lied der Deutschen" by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, with Bertolt Brecht's "Kinderlied" (Children's Hymn).

However, the proposal did not gain traction, as it was not supported by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). Merkel, in a statement through government spokesman Steffen Seibert, expressed her appreciation for the current anthem, stating that she finds it beautiful.

Ramelow, who has expressed his desire to put Brecht's children's hymn up for a vote as a potential national anthem, believes that the text of the children's hymn is wonderful and could potentially be a basis for a joint national anthem. He has also mentioned that he can relate to the third stanza of the current anthem, which is the one that is currently in use.

The debate on the national anthem is centered around the idea of finding a national anthem that can be sung with joy by all citizens. Ramelow, who is known to have sung the third stanza of the current anthem with enthusiasm in the past, has expressed concern about many East Germans not singing the national anthem for various reasons.

The proposal to change the national anthem was not a new concept, as it had been discussed during the reunification period. However, it was not successful then, and the 2019 debate did not result in a change to the national anthem either.

CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann criticized Ramelow's proposal to vote on the national anthem, stating that the national anthem and flag represent democracy, fundamental rights, and the rule of law. Linnemann further accused Ramelow of seeking a culture war and using the Basic Law for that purpose.

The current national anthem, "Das Lied der Deutschen," remains in place, and the debate surrounding its potential replacement continues. The German national anthem, as it currently stands, is facing debate due to the proposal by Bodo Ramelow, with many citizens and politicians weighing in on both sides of the issue.
