LG Electronics fortifies its position in Vietnam through cybersecurity achievements

In the bustling industrial landscape of Vietnam, LG Electronics' Haiphong facility stands as a testament to the country's growing prowess in the automotive sector. Amidst the ongoing complexities with the pandemic and a prolonged trade deficit with South Korea, South Korea is boosting its investment and exports to Vietnam, taking advantage of tax cuts under a trade pact. This broader context sets the stage for LG's operations in Vietnam.

On May 23, LG Electronics Vietnam unveiled its new "TV masterpieces," but it's the company's Haiphong plant that's making headlines for a different reason. The facility, part of a larger integrated manufacturing complex that includes LG Display and LG Innotek, has achieved the Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) Level 3 certification from TÜV Rheinland.

This milestone positions LG as a trusted Tier-1 supplier in the automotive industry. The CSMS Level 3 certification validates LG's systematic application of robust cybersecurity processes across the entire lifecycle of automotive components. This achievement reinforces LG's leadership in the development of secure, software-defined vehicle technologies.

The Haiphong plant, established in 2015, produces in-vehicle infotainment systems, home appliances, and camera modules. It is LG's largest production base for vehicle components globally and plays a critical role in supplying advanced automotive technologies to major global carmakers.

The certification strengthens LG's competitive edge in the rapidly evolving mobility ecosystem. It enables LG to meet stringent global regulatory requirements and partner with leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who prioritize cybersecurity in their supply chains.

LG has implemented a comprehensive Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) at the Haiphong facility. This includes real-time threat detection, secure software development practices, and rigorous vulnerability assessments. The facility also adheres to the Automotive SPICE for Cybersecurity framework.

The automotive components market in Vietnam is projected to grow at over 14 per cent annually through 2028, driven by strong government support, rising consumer demand, especially for electric vehicles, and increasing foreign investment. With LG Electronics having positioned Vietnam as a key manufacturing and R&D hub in Southeast Asia, the future of the Haiphong facility looks bright.

The CSMS Level 3 certification is a regulatory requirement in over 56 countries, including the EU. It demonstrates LG's commitment to delivering secure and reliable mobility solutions, a commitment that is crucial in today's interconnected world.

Jung Han Kwon leads the Cyber Security Governance Unit at LG VS Vietnam, while Nam-Sik Jang heads the Vehicle Component Production Cybersecurity at LG Electronics. Their teams have worked tirelessly to ensure the Haiphong facility meets the highest standards of cybersecurity.

LG Electronics is actively expanding its production at the Hai Phong site, including a $1 billion investment in LG Display's OLED complex, raising the total investment there to $5.6 billion by 2024. The Hai Phong facility is also LG’s largest vehicle component production hub, having achieved top-tier CSMS Level 3 certification, highlighting its role in advanced and secure automotive component manufacturing for global automakers as of August 2025.

This milestone reinforces LG's position as a leader in the global automotive industry, a position it aims to maintain and build upon in the years to come.
