Could 8,000 new locations be coming up? - Leverkusen considers enlarging its stadium.
During the last season, with the exception of the first Europa League game against Häcken, every match saw the home stands completely filled. Trainer Xabi Alonso (42) had already mentioned to club president Fernando Carro (59) in February, "Perhaps we need to expand the stadium. We really enjoy being close to the fans."
The boss paid heed to his coach's thoughts. "We'll give it some thought," says Carro. However, given that the BayArena, with its 30,210 seats, is located in the residential neighborhood of Bismarckstraße in Leverkusen, some challenges need to be tackled. Carro remarks, "The chances of it happening are pretty slim." Nevertheless, Alonso has a reputation for not backing down from obstacles.
A potential avenue for expansion exists in the south of the arena. There, only a very small tribune with loges and club management offices are present. These could be relocated.
The possibility of a new curve could be created at the location of the glass front, similar to the north where the Bayer supporters stand. Depending on its design, the capacity could increase by up to 4,000 to 8,000 spots.
More standing room would mean more fans can come to see the champion play at the stadium. We could even introduce a row of loges to finance the expansion by generating higher revenues.
