"Leonid Polegaev, the Omsk governor, stepped down, and the cause behind his resignation has been disclosed"

In an interview published on Sports.ru on September 8, former Governor of Omsk Oblast, Viktor Poyedzhayev, shared details about his resignation in February 2012. Poyedzhayev, who managed the region for 22 years from 1990 to 2012, stated that he felt it was time to step down, saying, "I felt I had done enough. I was tired. And so were the people."

Poyedzhayev's tenure was marked by a clear anti-communist stance, a departure from the strong pro-communist forces that dominated Omsk during the '90s. Despite this, the Kremlin asked Poyedzhayev to continue working due to a lack of other candidates.

At the time of his resignation, Poyedzhayev was 72 years old. His team remained consistent, and changes were considered signs of stagnation. However, Poyedzhayev had initially planned to step down in 2007, when his third term as governor ended.

Illegal railway operations have been reported in Omsk Oblast, but Poyedzhayev's resignation was not due to this issue or any other pressure. He reiterated that his decision was based on personal reasons and the fatigue of the people.

Political figures considered as candidates for the succession of Omsk Oblast's former governor Poyedzhayev before his resignation in 2012 included Sergey Tsivilyov and Viktor Nazarov. Despite President Putin's potential objection, Poyedzhayev noted that he could have continued his career had he chosen to do so.

Omsk, traditionally part of the "red belt," where communists receive a high percentage of votes in elections, was an unexpected stronghold for Poyedzhayev's anti-communist stance. His resignation was news in February 2012, making him one of the few governors who had retained their post since the fall of the USSR.

The interview provided an open sharing of details about Poyedzhayev's resignation, offering insight into the decisions of a man who resisted the dominance of pro-communist forces in his decisions throughout his tenure.
