Leipzig Central Station Safety Collaboration Celebrates 25 Years: Review of the 'Joint Operations Group for Bahnhof-Zentrum' (GEG BaZe)

Headline: GEG BaZe Marks 25th Anniversary Amidst Successful Crime-Fighting Efforts in Leipzig

In the heart of Leipzig, the Joint Task Force (GEG BaZe) is gearing up for a significant milestone. On September 3, 2025, they will celebrate their 25th anniversary, inviting the public to join them from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ritterstraße.

Over the past two and a half decades, GEG BaZe has been a stalwart in maintaining safety and order in Leipzig, particularly at the city's central station. The unit has been instrumental in combating various forms of crime, from property crimes and drug offenses to violent crimes and violations of the Residence Act.

In 2024 alone, GEG BaZe conducted over 4,600 checks at Leipzig Central Station and its surrounding areas, securing around 1,800 grams of various drugs in over 570 crimes. They also carried out 13 targeted operations and identified 95 immigration-related offenses.

The year was not without its challenges. Nearly 3,400 violent crimes were recorded in the area of responsibility of the police station, with property crimes, drug offenses, and violent crimes being the main issues. However, the unit's persistence paid off, with many of these crimes resulting in arrests.

One such arrest was made in January 2024, when a 33-year-old Cameroonian national, a person of interest to the police since 2023, was successfully repatriated. The individual had over 30 cases involving drug trafficking, and during his arrest, he exhibited aggressive behavior and caused significant damage to a holding cell.

The name of the individual is not publicly available, but it's clear that his arrest was a significant victory in the war against drug trafficking.

In addition to their regular operations, GEG BaZe also conducted eight PuZ days with support from various units in 2024. These days were focused on targeted manhunts and violence prevention operations.

The unit also received assistance during the UEFA European Football Championship, with "quadro patrols" being introduced across Germany. These patrols consisted of foreign officers and local police, and one such officer, a Portuguese pickpocket, was apprehended during the tournament.
