Left Party's Candidate Faces Backlash Over Iran Ties Ahead of Local Elections
Yunus Cakar, the Left Party's mayoral candidate for Osterholz-Scharmbeck, has faced growing criticism over his alleged ties to Iran's regime and controversial statements. His role in a 2023 demonstration against Israel has intensified debates within the party about anti-Semitism and political affiliations. The controversy comes ahead of local elections in September, where Cakar remains the official nominee despite mounting concerns.
In April 2023, Cakar took a leading role at an Al-Quds Day march in Frankfurt am Main, an annual event established by Iran's regime in 1979. Around 750 participants waved Palestinian flags, keffiyehs, and banners featuring portraits of Ayatollahs Khomeini and Khamenei. One attendee carried a large flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Cakar moderated the event, reading out demands and rallying the crowd.
Cakar has been chairman of the Islamic Center of Osterholz since 2016. A Turkish-language propaganda outlet linked to Iran's regime has reported on his activities there. For years, he has publicly criticised Israel and expressed support for figures within Iran's Islamist government. His candidacy has divided the Left Party. While local branches in Niedersachsen back his bid, broader party leadership has avoided direct comment on his alleged sympathies for Iran and the Huthi movement. Internal discussions have surfaced, particularly in Rhineland-Palatinate, where members debated a resolution criticising 'real existing Zionism.' Party officials have attempted damage control, but no formal position on Cakar's Iran links has been issued beyond regional support.
The controversy surrounds Cakar's political ties and public statements as he prepares for the September election. His involvement in pro-Iran demonstrations and long-standing criticism of Israel have fuelled internal Left Party disputes. With no unified stance from higher party levels, the debate over his candidacy remains unresolved.
