Empowering Senior Citizens: Davao City's Leadership Training for Resilient Leaders

Davao City recently hosted a two-day Leadership and Conflict Management Training for senior citizens on June 26 and 27, 2025. This initiative, part of the city's broader effort to enhance community-based leadership, aimed to build more resilient and community-oriented leaders within the grassroots level.

The training, conducted by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), was led by Ms. Nerlyn A. Altillero, a licensed social worker, human rights advocate, and President of the Kabataang Mandirigma Youth Organization. Ms. Altillero, who has been involved in child and human rights work since she was 9 years old, shared her deeply personal journey and emphasized the importance of adaptability, empathy, and understanding in leadership.

During her session, Ms. Altillero underscored that effective leaders must be able to understand diverse personalities, act with compassion, and demonstrate clarity in both planning and people management. She also emphasized that "service is not about money; it is about surrendering everything and offering your best in service to others."

The training took place in Agdao and Buhangin districts, involving participants from various barangays. Many participants expressed admiration and inspiration from Ms. Altillero's story. One senior participant, in particular, admired Ms. Altillero's teaching that real leadership comes from understanding others, not just creating programs.

The training was a part of Davao City's commitment to inclusive development, highlighting the wisdom and leadership potential of its elderly citizens. The CSWDO expressed gratitude for the active participation of senior citizens in the training, which is a city-wide effort to emphasize the value of continued education and empowerment for senior citizens.

In addition to her role in the Kabataang Mandirigma Youth Organization, Ms. Altillero currently serves as the Human Resource at the Ananda Marga Special Academic Institution. Her involvement in this training underscores her dedication to empowering individuals at all stages of life, fostering community-oriented leaders within the city.

This initiative marks a significant step in Davao City's efforts to promote community-oriented leaders within the grassroots level. By equipping senior citizens with leadership skills and conflict management strategies, the city aims to build more resilient leaders who will contribute positively to their communities.
