Lawsuit filed by X and xAI against Apple and OpenAI, alleging monopolistic control in the AI sector

In a recent development, Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has filed a lawsuit against tech giants Apple and OpenAI. The lawsuit alleges that Apple is favouring ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI chatbot, by restricting other AI chatbots like Musk's Grok. This, according to the complaint, creates an AI monopoly and suppresses competition.

The lawsuit claims that the real prize is data. By giving ChatGPT exclusive access to potentially billions of prompts from hundreds of millions of iPhones, OpenAI is effectively building an impenetrable "moat" around its market leadership. However, no new information about the value of this data or the extent of OpenAI's "moat" is provided.

The lawsuit does not mention any involvement of Proton's Lumo AI assistant in the allegations.

The lawsuit further accuses Apple of delaying approvals for updates to the Grok app, hindering its competitiveness.

As these super apps, like the one x is building, combine social media, messaging, payments, and other services into a single platform, they threaten Apple's lucrative hardware sales. The partnership between ChatGPT and Apple allows the AI assistant to control core iPhone features, making it the only AI assistant with such capabilities.

The lawsuit suggests that Apple has agreed to this partnership as a defensive move against the rise of "super apps". It argues that this denies users a fair choice and goes against OpenAI's own strategy document stating that users should be able to pick their AI assistant.

The complaint alleges that Apple is using its control over the App Store to disadvantage specific AI apps, such as those from x and xAI. Highly-ranked apps from these companies are reportedly buried and excluded from the App Store's "Must-Have Apps" list, while ChatGPT is prominently featured.

X and xAI argue that this conduct harms everyone, leading to less innovation, fewer choices, and higher prices for consumers. The broader AI monopoly lawsuit aims to dismantle this arrangement and recover the billions of dollars in lost value and sales that x and xAI claim to have suffered.

The lawsuit also accuses Apple of viewing the rise of super apps as a danger, comparing it to "letting the barbarians in at the gate." There is no evidence presented in the paragraph about any agreements beyond the integration deal with ChatGPT.

As these super apps become more powerful with cloud-based AI services, they make the smartphone itself less important, as users could simply buy a cheaper phone and get all the functionality they need from the app. However, the impact of this shift on the tech industry remains to be seen.
