The incident began in Bochum-Langendreer, where the police attempted to stop a car around 3:30 AM due to driving without lights. However, the driver ignored the stop signals and fled, leading the police on a chase through Bochum and into Witten.

The accident occurred in the area of the Hauptstraße in Witten, where the car collided with a tree. The crashed vehicle, which was later found out to be stolen from Bochum city centre between September 4 and 5, was no longer roadworthy and was seized.
