Law enforcement agencies scouring skies for undocumented immigrants in helicopter patrols
In the past week, the Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge district has seen a significant increase in anti-smuggling operations, with multiple arrests and apprehensions of individuals suspected of illegal activities.
On Zehistaer Street in Pirna, four men and one woman, presumably Syrian nationals, were apprehended. Similarly, two Syrian nationals were stopped on the A17 near Heidenau. In total, 37 individuals, including a Ukrainian smuggler, were apprehended over the weekend in various locations such as Elbe Valley, Pirna, Osterzgebirge, and Bad Schandau.
The Federal Police in the district has been deploying helicopters daily to find smugglers and illegal migrants, with frequent use along the A17 and B170. The ground operations are supported by the reserve and state police, including the Saxon Reserve Police and the Joint Fugitive Squad (GFG). In total, 62 officers were deployed in these operations.
On Friday, the Dresden Police Directorate conducted an operation to combat smuggling crime, checking 136 vehicles and 290 people. As a result, 32 people were found to have committed an offense related to illegal entry, and an arrest warrant was issued against a suspect, who is now in custody.
Sunday was particularly challenging in the district with 144 refugees. These refugees came from various countries, including Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, and Egypt. Eight men and one child were found at the bus station in Pirna, and their nationality is currently unknown.
The public can report suspicious observations and suspected smuggler vehicles to the Federal Police Inspectorate in Berggießhübel at 035023-676 300. Alternatively, they can use the free hotline of the Federal Police at 0800 6 888 000 or the contact form on www.bundespolizei.de.
The authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain the safety and security of the district.
