Latvia's sports funding crisis sparks urgent calls for gambling revenue solutions

Latvia's sports sector is facing financial strain as budgets for federations drop by €1.4 million. The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) has called for urgent action, describing the cuts as unacceptable. Officials are now exploring new ways to secure funding, including potential revenue from the gambling industry. The financial troubles come amid broader concerns about public health. LOK President Žoržs Lazdiņš has linked poor health outcomes to a lack of sports participation. He argues that securing stable funding is essential for improving physical activity across the country.

With basic budgets for sports federations reduced, Lazdiņš has proposed finding solutions through joint efforts. One suggestion involves tapping into the gambling sector, where an estimated €50 million is lost annually to illegal, unlicensed betting shops. The LOK sees this as a potential source of revenue to support sports development. To address the crisis, the LOK has requested the Saeima Sports Subcommittee reconvene. An extraordinary meeting of the LOK Executive Committee is also scheduled for 31 October, where funding distribution will be discussed. Before that, on 28 October, the LOK will meet with the Ministry of Education and Science to push for solutions.

The upcoming meetings aim to find concrete ways to restore funding for sports federations. If successful, the proposals could redirect money from illegal gambling into legal sports financing. The outcome will determine whether Latvia's sports sector can recover from its current financial shortfall.
